Prairie Royalty -- Monarchs visit LREC
Monarch butterfly eggs have been found on three types of milkweed at LREC in the past couple of weeks. We've been raising a few of them ourselves so we can witness the exciting changes of these creatures.

Hunting hawk leaves tracks at Litzsinger
We all have seen a variety of animal tracks in the snow over the past several weeks. Thank goodness the Glass House Quiz from the February newsletter gave us a head start on identifying what tracks belong to whom.
Last week we were fortunate enough to see some unusual tracks here at LREC. Anne noticed our resident red-shouldered hawk diving along the hillside near the Glass House. Later that afternoon, she guided us out for a spectacular show in the snow:
Several marks were left as the hawk hunted for prey.
With two final wing tracks, the mouse tracks come to an abrupt end...
A closer look at the wing tracks in the snow.

The Bees are Swarming at LREC!
On Wednesday, April 24, a honey bee swarm was discovered on a Cottonwood tree. The next day, another swarm was discovered about 10 feet from the ground in a young Ohio Buckeye. LREC volunteer and bee keeper, Lil Collins, “coaxed” this swarm into a bee hive box. Today, a second swarm was collected from the same location.

Wind in the Acers
The wind was wailing in the trees yesterday. From the glass house, we heard the creeking of the sycamores and the tapping of leaves as they pelted the windows. Then we heard a 'crack' followed by the sounds of a tree tumbling into its neighbors. Student groups were called out of the woods and into the prairies.
One of the many Boxelder (Acer negundo) trees near Deer Creek fell during the windy period in the afternoon. The wind was followed by a half-inch of rain which ended just in time for a lovely pink and orange sunset.

It's Spring!
The bluebells are popping up...

...and the witch hazel is blooming...

...the spice bush is showing its color...

...the pawpaw and Ohio buckeye buds are ready to burst...

...and the Freedom School community is preparing their raised beds for some springtime gardening.

After the 9/14 flash flood...
Note the concrete pillar that once supported the boardwalk.

The deck tables were all pushed against the downstream railing.
The cabin had about 2 feet of flood water.

The barn/office space also received about 2 feet of water.

Large debris above the stream bank.

The creek bank was deeply eroded.
