Sedge seed collected by ERC
This is the sedge seed collected by the ERC with the help of Bill Davit, Hallie, Jenna, and Malinda on June 28th. They collected 22.87 oz of seed in just one morning of work! This seed will be used to add sedges to the rain garden and the pasture prairie.

What is the next step in handling the sedge seed? Will it be started in flats or sown directly? What time of year?

The next step is to sow it in flats and sow it out directly. I put the seed directly in the refridgerator so its viability would not decrease, which sedges are apparently very susceptible to. Sedges should be cold moist stratified, either by sowing them out in the winter where they can go through the freeze-thaw cycle, by being in a bag of moist soil in the fridge or by being in flats put outside for the winter. We will probably use some of all of these methods to get sedges growing.
