Freedom School LIONS Program

The LIONS team at the Freedom School is really focused on native plants, and have taken the lead on a school-wide effort to implement a sustainable schoolyard restoration, including native prairie, woodland, and vegetable garden. During their weekly after-school sessions, the LIONS students have learned about native plants through study at school and at sites across the region, which gives them the skills and confidence needed to become leaders among their peers for school-wide projects. The projects initiated and sustained by the LIONS students have inspired other teachers to also use a more place-based education approach in their teaching and to make better use of the schoolgrounds in their curriculum.

Now in their third year, the garden has become established on the school grounds and a part of the school’s ongoing program, but the LIONS will continue to meet periodically to continue learning, manage the existing restoration site, and expand the restoration area.
