Flynn Park Elementary School LIONS Program
LIONS participants at Flynn Park had a busy year last year with projects that included helping software developers test out new hand-held “augmented reality” software in a local park, investigating change in their community through historic aerial photographs, and creating geocaches that help people learn more about the local community surrounding the school. When a geocacher finds one of the new caches, they get a quick history lesson as well as the usual rewards that go with geocaching. LIONS members also placed travel bugs in each of their caches, sending each out on a mission. Through the coming year, LIONS will be looking forward to tracking how their travel bugs are doing.
A new project this year is to create original augmented reality games that build on local history. Students used historic Census data to identify who lived in each student’s home and neighborhood in 1930. This data is now being combined with community investigations to create mystery stories that fellow LIONS will try to solve with the help of the clues embedded in the AR games. Look here for project updates.
